Why I Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions

2014

Happy New Year!

With the passing of 2013, and the coming of 2014, we are seeing all kinds of great resolutions being made. Resolutions to lose weight, finish a task, or maybe memorize more scripture. I wanted to leave a quick personal thought with you all as we come into this fresh year.

When people ask what are my “New Year’s” Resolutions, I haven’t had an answer for some years now. The reason for this is quite simply, I don’t wait for New Year’s. Resolutions are a great way to change old habits, start a new discipline, or even develop yourself mentally. Thing is, so many people wait until the first of the year, give up after a month or so, and then say “Well, I’ll try again next year.” and leave it at that.

Why wait for a new year to start a resolution? Why wait for the change of a date to change your life?

According to James, we are not guaranteed the next day. This shouldn’t cause us to live in fear, but rather with intention.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happentomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

We are blessed with a new day every time we open our eyes each morning. If you make some resolutions today on New Year’s, That awesome. But don’t for one second think that you should wait for another new years to make some more. In the words of Zig Ziglar-

“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”

Let’s resolve everyday to live it as such.

  1. I am close to eighty and I’ve never made resolutions. Life is the best motivator! It gives you problems, you have to solve them. No fear, no procrastination allowed. Think what must be done, do it and enjoy every minute of life (even at the most trying periods)

  2. I feel the EXACT same way. I Don’t wait for the new year to make changes – if i feel prompted to change something, I start right then. One friend gives each year a theme word (last year was “transformation”). I wait until a season had run its course and then i name it. These seasons are based on what God is doing in our life, and He most certainly is not limited to doing things inside a calendar year – so why we be?

    • Life being seasons is a great way to look at it! Especially considering the passage found in Ecclesiastes 3. These can be long or quite short, but like you said, should be changed immediately when the time is right- not when the year changes. Thank you for leaving your thoughts on the matter. : )
